Preserved lichen and moss walls: seven projects in homes, offices and venues
From a lime-green wall to a Neapolitan trattoria: practical ideas with preserved greenery.
Preserved lichen and moss are 100% real plants: the sap is replaced with a biodegradable solution of natural glycerine and water, so they keep their freshness and softness for around 10 years, with no water or light. Here are seven projects.
1. A lichen wall in the kitchen
A green wall that gives the kitchen a unique atmosphere: preserved greenery allows original, fully bespoke compositions.
2. A lime-green wall, with Caron Design
A spectacular lime-green preserved lichen wall, created with the Caron Design studio.
3. Private apartment: mixed lichen, with Ferretti Studio
A multicoloured preserved lichen solution for an apartment, designed with Ferretti Studio.
4. Garda House offices, Padenghe (Brescia)
Artworks, walls and spheres of preserved moss and lichen in a thousand colours and shades.
5–7. A Japanese restaurant in Brescia, a venue in Rome, Trattoria Vanvitelli in Naples
In Brescia a single strip of lichen was enough to make the space warmer and more natural; in Rome a preserved moss wall with Polemoss inserts; in Naples, for Trattoria Vanvitelli, designs and shapes chosen with the client.
Features worth knowing
- Indoor use only, with a minimum ambient humidity of around 50%. If it dries out in the sun, a few sprays of water are enough.
- Sound-absorbing, with good insulating properties; it attracts neither insects nor dust.
- Self-extinguishing.
- Custom colours thanks to natural pigments; reindeer lichen (Cladonia stellaris) comes from protected areas of Lapland.

Around 8–10 years indoors, away from direct sunlight and with adequate ambient humidity.
Does preserved lichen need to be watered?
No. Only if it dries out a lot from sun or dry air, a few sprays of water restore its softness.
